Frequently asked questions

How do I split every page into its own file?

In Split PDF, add your file and click “Every page” under Quick fill. The ranges field fills itself with 1, 2, 3 and so on, one file per page. There are also buttons for every 2, 5 or 10 pages; only the ones smaller than your page count are shown.

How do I write page ranges?

Split PDF uses commas to separate files and hyphens to join consecutive pages. Entering 1-3, 5, 8-10 creates three PDFs: pages 1 to 3, page 5, and pages 8 to 10. If a number is higher than the document's page count, you'll see an error when you run it.

How do I get the split files?

When Split PDF produces more than one file, they are bundled into a single ZIP that starts downloading right away. Each file keeps the original name with _1, _2 and so on added. If you'd rather not use the ZIP, open “Download files one by one” on the results screen.

Is it free?

Yes. Use it free in your web browser, with no sign-up or software to install.

Are my files stored on a server?

No. This tool runs inside your browser, so your file is never sent to a server and never leaves your device.

Which files can I use?

You can add one PDF file at a time.

How long does it take?

In our test in Chrome on a 2021 MacBook Pro (M1 Pro), splitting a 100-page PDF (4.2 MB) into three files took about 0.3 seconds (the middle of three runs). The work happens on your own device, so older or slower devices take longer.
