Frequently asked questions

What kind of encryption is used?

Protect PDF encrypts your file with AES-256. When someone opens the result, their PDF viewer asks for the password, and the content only appears once the correct one is entered. The password can be anywhere from 4 to 128 characters long.

Can I block only printing or editing?

No. Protect PDF uses the password to block opening the file. Anyone who knows the password can also print, copy and edit the document after opening it, so share the password only with people who are allowed to see the content.

What if I forget the password?

We can't recover a password set with Protect PDF, because we never store your file or your password. Keep an unprotected copy of the original before adding a password, and write the password down somewhere safe.

Is it free?

Yes. Use it free in your web browser, with no sign-up or software to install.

Are my files stored on a server?

No. This tool runs inside your browser, so your file is never sent to a server and never leaves your device.

Which files can I use?

You can add one PDF file at a time.
